August 2013 Archives

A couple of weeks ago I took the first step in maximizing my true wardrobe potential. I had been wanting a new black chiffon skirt to add to my friday date night rotation. Instead of shelling out for a brand new separate, I decided to make use of what I already owned, repurposing one of my favorite little black dresses.

I had seen it all over other blogs and Pinterest, but still couldn't get over the initial fear of trying to pass off a dress as a skirt, worrying that I might come off as an oversized, not as colorful Punky Brewster. Once I threw style caution to the wind, I slipped on my flirty chiffon dress, found a neutral top that cut off at the most flattering point of my hips, slipped it on and voila! A new outfit was born. My husband did a head turn and gave me sexy looks all through dinner, I saved cash, and I no longer have to reserve my favorite dress exclusively for special occasions.

Once I realized the promise that all of my other favorite pieces had (dresses, button downs and blouses, oh my), I realized just how much I had been limiting myself and my wardrobe possibilities for the last two decades.

The moral to my story? Don't be afraid to mix it up, layer, and go against the grain. You might create a look that is even better than the original. I know this new discovery is going to save me some serious shopping time...at least until winter.*

Model Drink

Her energy drink tasted weird without vodka.

I passed up the Teen Choice Awards last night in favor of Dexter, but I did catch some post show highlights including Lea Michele's beautifully heart-wrenching tribute to her late Glee Co-star and boyfriend, Cory Monteith, and of course, the cutest and cruelest looks that walked the blue carpet. I'm loving life right now, so I'm only going to focus on the looks I adored. Without further ado*

Pretty little liar liar pants on fire! Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell was the epitome of hot Halston chic in a stunning and sharp Jenni Kanye pantsuit that might have been a touch too sexy for the Nickelodeon crowd, but a-okay in my book. Good thing she didn't get slimed. p.s. Love the pop of color i.e. those chartreuse Jimmy Choos.

Oh, have percy. Percy Jackson starlet Alexandra Daddario looked utterly cool and confident in a simple yet elegant Diane von Furstenburg mini with neck accented bling and edgy black Jimmy Choos. Loved the hair, the makeup and the h2t (head to toe) look.

Easy, breezy, beautiful Bridgit Mendler looked every bit the adorable Good Luck Charlie cover girl in a strapless floral mini that was colorful, age appropriate and beyond cute, especially loving the pocket pose.

Happy Monday!

Fall Wish List

with 0 Comments

Fall doesn't officially start until September 22nd, but, as always, I am already fully immersed in all of the autumnal styles and trends that I hope to be sporting in the upcoming season.

Here, in no particular order are a few of the items that are topping my Wish List.

The coziest Baby Alpaca and Wool Tribeca Jacket that will take any look up a level with it's cool graphic knit and hot exaggerated shawl collar. Peruvian Connection, $289.

Boho is here to stay, and this vintage inspired floppy brimmed Autumn Felt Hat will add a romantic touch to every outing. Favorite part? I can rock it year round. Roxy, $34.

Goodbye coral lips and mango manis, hello blackberry. Make the transition into fall from your lips right down to your fingertips and toes with Deborah Lippman's Forsaken Lip and Duo Collection inspired by the hit HBO series, True Blood. The two piece set comes with a Let it Bleed Nail Lacquer and Bite Me Lip Color so you're guaranteed to look bloody hot. Vamp it up, from Beauty Bridge, $38

My lightweight roomy summer totes have got to go in order to make room for this neutral structured Vivian Dome Satchel that will add elegance to my day and the perfect trio of fall hues to my life with a gorgeous combo of cognac, fawn and caviar. Brahmin, $325

It's almost fall, and depending where you live in the continental US, it may be time to pack up your open toed sandals, breezy summer wedges and flippy floppies. We all want beautiful booties for the new season, and we don't want to have to pay a fortune to get them.

Submitted for your approval - these beyond bootyful Idore booties from Novus Shoes, marked down from $79.99 to, wait for it, $15. Featuring sweet suede, a chunky wood heel, laser cut stars and a gold zippered back with lightning rod pull, you can't go wrong with these babies, especially for the price.

p.s. They come in brown, black and beige to boot.

Happy Monday my lovelies. I'm sure that by now you've read about all of the drama, hijinks and highlights surrounding last night's VMA Awards... JT and N'Sync were reunited, One Direction got booed by the audience, Harry Styles got dissed by ex T. Swift and Miley got freaky with Thicke. In other news....here are the looks that I liked and the ones that need to go bye bye bye.

The Good: The pop beauty bestie duo of Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez nailed it in navy with Taylor rocking a sleek bodycon Herve Leger by Max Azria gown and a Boardwalk Empire inspired 'do while Selena amazed in an Atelier Versace number that showcased a half exposed bustier and dramatic thigh high side split.

The Bad: In addition to going a tad too far with her suggestive foam fingered performance alongside Blurred Lines crooner Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus came across as a tween matador in her bejeweled Dolce & Gabbana cropped top combo while Lil Kim looked more like a Kickass 2 superhero reject than a rock star ex-con rapper.

Back to Boarding School

with 0 Comments

So I'm going to boarding school this year, and while I'm excited, I'm worrying about what to wear. Packing space is limited, and I don't have many chances to shop while I'm at school. So, two questions. What are wardrobe staples I need to have? Also, I don't have many dresses, so what are cute ways to dress up a blouse/any shirt and skirt combo? Dressy enough for an event where something like a dress would be most appropriate.
Thank you so much!

Hi Lily!

Thanks for writing in! I am so honored and flattered that you have enlisted my help in packing for boarding school! I'm assuming that you have a mandatory school uniform to rock Monday through Friday, so I'm going to narrow my focus on some must have basics for weekend, formal and leisure occasions. Class is now in session.

Jeans & Pants - One pair of casual boyfriend jeans and one pair of nice dark rinse jeans or skinnies that can be easily dressed up with a cute top. Extra credit: A pair of denim jean shorts/cutoffs that will totally make the grade while lounging around the dorm and on study breaks. A good pair of crisp khaki pants, shorts, and/or skirt serves as a great neutral base for any adorable academic ensemble.

Tops - Crisp long sleeved button downs in your favorite shades, a few soft tissue tees, sweaters/cardigans to add pops of color and texture, and at least one long sleeved henley, thermal and turtleneck to layer once it gets chilly. A peplum and or lacy top will instantly dress up the dressy jeans I just told you to pack.

Blazer - A classic navy or plaid blazer is a versatile piece that will heighten any look. I personally love the cropped variety with elbow patches on the sleeves. Nothing wrong with going preppy, you're a boarding school girl after all. As for alternative outerwear, a denim jacket and faux leather moto jacket or bomber will keep you warm come Autumn and never go out of style.

Skirts & Dresses - A few pretty pleated skirts will take you a long way. Leather ones are all the rage and feel so un-uniformal, especially paired with fun tights. I know you mentioned that you don't have a lot of dresses, but do yourself a favor and pack at least one cute all purpose LBD (little black dress). It may become your go-to piece for dances, banquets, events and formals. If not, don't worry. You can always borrow a frock from one of your new besties' closets, that's what suite mates are for.

Shoes - I've always had a soft spot for saddle shoes and lace up oxfords, but I also recommend packing a classic pair of ballet flats or loafers (one solid, one fun print like plaid, polka dot or kitty cat to mix it up), and at least one pair of pretty black or nude heels.

As for your 2nd query, the easiest and most inexpensive way to pump up any basic blouse and skirt combo is with a sparkly statement necklace or a pretty detachable collar. Eye-catching bling and instant drama = A+ styling.

When it comes to dressing up your school uniform and off school duty blouses and skirts even further, take a cue from Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf with posh headbands, colored tights/knee high socks and heirloom brooches. Follow her lead and you very well may be the Queen Bee before the first semester is over.

I hope this helps Lily! Sending you best wishes for a super stylish school year.
