December 2013 Archives

As much as I love wearing Stella, Chloe, Miu Miu and Marc Jacobs, at times I get an even bigger thrill from wearing a design produced by an up and coming fresh faced fashion designer. Maybe it's my competitive edge, perhaps it's the Project Runway fan in me, but I always want to be the first one wearing the next big name on the fashion scene.

Meet Shavonne Cooper, a budding fashion designer based in Philly who recently launched her own sleek, sophisticated and completely wearable collection of super chic staples that will keep a girl looking posh, pristine and perfect all autumn and winter long. The Shavonne DeAnn AW collection offers a timeless sampling of bodycon dresses, cozy separates and more pieces in a signature black and grey color palette that will go with just about anything and everything in your closet.

I was lucky enough to get to try one of Shavonne's featured pieces, the Kiasha Tunic, a versatile colorblocked autumn/winter essential that can be worn as a dress or a top when paired with tights, leggings, or your sleekest pair of skinnies. This one piece wonder is just begging to be layered with a thin tissue tee or turtleneck underneath, a black leather moto jacket, military parka or wool cardigan thrown over on top.

What I love - At my present state, I can rock this tunic all through my second and third trimester. My favorite look is worn belted with skinny maternity jeans for the ultimate bump flattering basic. Then I can stilll show it off next season with a pair of opaque tights or leather leggings after I've returned to my pre baby bod. *[wishful thinking]

Ask me what I'm wearing and I'll proudly state, "It's a Shavonne". Just give her some time folks, this girl's got everything it takes to become a common fashion household name.

Oh Baby Boy

A little over 22 weeks and I am in full on baby shopping mode. We secured our stroller, the crib and changing table are on their way courtesy of the best Grandma ever*, and the nursery is already in the early stages of design, albeit in my head.

Baby boy already has enough newborn outfits to get him through a rotation of 5 daily outfit changes, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to snatch up more itty bitty outfits for my son. Although I find myself in unfamiliar territory, picking out the wardrobe staples for this currently kicking, soon to be bouncing off the walls baby boy, I am surprised to find that I am loving the process just as much as if I were buying ruffled dresses, hot pink bows, bloomers and trunk loads of pretty girlie things.

I've learned to shop off season and the clearance sections to score a ton of adorable baby apparel at up to 75% off. A few of my favorite stops have been American Apparel where I picked up a few unisex baby basics before the ultrasound revealed our little man's family jewels, H&M, the Gap, and the Children's Place where I've found complete looks that will make our boy the preppiest kid on the block.

Frogs and snails and puppy dog tails? I don't think so. Chic ties and crests and little sweater vests, that's what this little boy's wardrobe is going to be made of.

The baby daddy and I are in the process of combining our closets to make room in the nursery, so our household has been going through some major apparel purging. I've already tossed over two dozen tanks and out of date denim styles, and it got me thinking about the classic pieces that remain, the ones I've had forever that are still relevant, well-fitting and in style.

There are basic elements that will always stand the test of trends and time, seen on fashion icons from yesterday and today - Audrey and Marilyn to Michelle Williams and Marion Cotillard. Here are my top 10 Classics that will always have a place in my jewelry box, cosmetic case and closet, no matter how many polos my man needs to squeeze in.

Shoe Sense

Confession: Whenever I get a new pair of shoes that I love, I wear them 24/7 until they're battered, scratched and soleless... to the point where they look sad, pitiful, and practically unwearable. Once they have received a decent burial and are well on their way to stiletto heaven, I immediately try to order a replacement pair, only to find out that said shoes have been discontinued for months. For all of the ladies out there who have an ongoing love affair with their shoes like I do, I have a little holiday tip that will keep you from having to kiss your favorite kicks goodbye.

Pack up your favorite pair and take them to a trip to the cobbler. Yes, they still do exist, right next door to the butcher, baker and candlestick maker. Bring your most beloved heels, flats, boots, etc, and ask your friendly neighborhood cobbler to apply a layer of rubber to the soles (black or beige works best). It isn't that pricey, your kicks will be more comfy, and your favorite shoes will last a lot longer.

You're welcome.
